AYAZ LATIF PALIJO (PRESIDENT OF AWAMI TAHREEK)

Ayaz Latif Palijo President of Awami Tahreek Ayaz Latif Palijo اياز لطیف پلیجو (born November 15, 1969) is a Sindhi Pakistani activist, lawyer, writer and teacher. Ayaz Latif Palijo was born in Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan, to a Baloch mother, the women's rights activist and artist Jeejee Zarina Baloch, and a South Asian leftist father and founder of Awami Tahreek, Rasool Bux Palijo Ayaz Latif Palijo is a graduate of civil engineering from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, graduate of law from Sindh University, Jamshoro, Pakistan, has done his graduation in environment and development from LEAD Int at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and has done his M.Sc. in Rural development from SU and Wye College, United Kingdom, and has secured first position in LL.M.. He is a LEAD fellow of cohort 7, State Department alumni and is also accredited for securing the release of more than 3500 innocent prisoners from different jails, bonded labour camps, illegal confinements, Dar-ul-Amans and police lockups. Ayaz Latif Palijo has written six books and hundreds of columns and his recent activities include launching a strong campaign against the man-made water shortage.

AWAMI TAHREEK

The Awami Tahreek (Sindhi Peoples Movement) was formed on March 5, 1970 in a meeting of leading writers, activists and intellectuals in Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan. At the same meeting, leading theoretician Rasool Bux Palijo was elected as its first General Secretary. It is a political party devoted to non-violence in its democratic struggle to attain freedom of People through the scientific and revolutionary tenets of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism. It is committed to people's democracy, economic and social justice and establishment of a welfare state in a country where people can have equity, political freedom, economic opportunity and genuine provincial autonomy. Over the years, Awami Tahreek has emerged as the foremost Democratic Left force in the country. It believes that a comprehensive overhauling of society is required in order to deliver the benefits of a welfare state to the masses. Awami Tahreek stands for equal rights for all citizens without distinction of sex, class, color, language, faith and creed. The Party has been able to effectively withstand the imperialist propaganda offensive in the aftermath of the setback and reverses to socialism internationally. The courageous battles fought under the Awami Tahreek's leadership, its role in the anti-imperialist, anti-establishment, anti-martiallaw and anti-feudal struggles and struggles on people's issues over more than three decades, found reflection in historical support of masses in movements like: Neelam Band Karyo Movement, Sindhi Voter Lists Movement, MRD, Journalist Movement, anti-urban terrorism movement and above all in Anti Kalabagh Dam and Thal Canal Movement. The Tahreek is strict in opposing capitalism, imperialism, army rule, dictatorships, terrorism, corruption, racism, gender discrimination and religious bigotry. The Party also promises the elimination of feudalism in accordance with the established principles of socialism to protect and advance the interests of peasantry. The Awami Tahreek has consistently championed the cause of the unity of the motherland, of all castes, communities, minorities and ethnic groups inhabiting our vast and diverse country. Ever since its foundation it came forward as the builder of Muslim-Hindu-Christian unity, as a fighter against communalism and riots, as a defender of the just rights of all the minorities, Sindhi peasantry and off all working classes of the country.

THE GREAT THEORITITION OF ASIA RASOOL BUX PALIJO

Rasool Bux Palijo son of Ali Mohammad Palijo and Laadee Bai was born at the village Mungar Khan Palijo, Jungshahi, Thatta District, Sindh on September 21, 1930. He got his early education at his village and then at Sindh Madarso Karachi. After joining the madarso and visiting Karachi and Hyderabad he was shocked by the illiteracy of Sindhis and started a movement for the education of Sindhi villagers. From the early childhood Sindhi, Urdu and English literature and European and Islamic History, Philosophy and Political science were his favorite subjects of study. At the age of 15 years he attained mastery over Sindhi, Udru and English languages and latter became well conversant with Arabic, Balochi, Seraiki, Punjabi and Persian languages. At an early age of fifteen years, he started his career as an activist and writer and today at the age 76 years he has earned a place in the pantheon of leaders from the South Asia who earned everlasting fame in the struggle against feudalism, martial-laws, colonialism and imperialism. He was one of the leading founders of Awami National Party, Sindh Mutahida Muhaz, Sindh Qomi Itehad, Bazm-e-Soofia-e Sindh, PONM, Sindhi Adabi Sangat, MRD, Anti One-Unit Movement and 4th March Movement. He has founded Awami Tahreek, Sindhi Haree Committee, Sindhiani Tahreek, Sindhi Shagird Tahreek, Sindhi Haree Tahreek, Pakistan Awami Jamhoori Itehad, Pakistan Awami Tahreek, Sindhi Mazdoor Tahreek, Sindh Intellectual Forum, Sindhi Awam Jo Qomi Itehad, Sindhi Girls Students Organization, Sujaag Bar Tahreek, Sindh Water Committee, 1940 Pakistan Resolution Implementation Committee Awami Jamhoori Tahreek and Anti Greater Thal Canal and Kalabagh Dam Action Committee. He also launched Neelam Band Karyo and Voter Listoon Sindhi men Chapayo Tahreek. He was one of the leading figures behind the Movement For Restoration of Democracy (MRD). He and his party Awami Tahreek played active role against illegal Army Operation in Bangladesh and Balochistan and in the Movement of Journalists against General Zia ul Haq and in Bhutto Bahcayo Tahreek. He is one of the outstanding speakers of Sub-continent, top Constitutional and Criminal Lawyers of Pakistan and the first Sindhi and South Asian Politician who launched and organized the movement against Kalabagh Dam, Violence in Educational Institutions, and against Urban Based Organized Terrorism. He has introduced a new nonviolent trend of democratic struggles in Sindh by way of Long Marchs. He is the author of more than 40 books and his books are on numerous subjects, ranging from literature to politics, prison dairies, culture and poetry etc. He became the first political prisoner who remained longest term in jail under political charges for more than 11 years and was declared as Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International in 1981. In late eighties he developed good political and cultural relations with Afghan President Dr. Najeebullah and his Party, Asian Students Association (ASA) Hong Kong, Asia Pacific Peace Forum, Communist Parties of India and Socialist and Intellectual Forums of United Kingdom, Thailand, USA, Vietnam, Soviet Union and Netherlands.
